It would be hard to say what part of the Sharathon impresses me most. I think it would end up being the day of testimonies and the individual prayer ministry our volunteers were able to do. The testimonies of what God had done last year through WCIF has me charged up and ready to take on this new broadcast year!
But then I think of the entire spirit of the following two days (fundraising days) as people called in their pledges and the phone operators not only gathered information but led the cheering section as each plateau was made. Their cheerfulness made callers feel appreciated and needed. Then I think, what about the rest of the team, our faithful, who called in and gave from their hearts? This is what the Sharathon was about, people standing with us because they know the effectiveness of God’s Word and the value of steady sustained contact with our community. Sharathon is a
win-win situation.
We as followers of Christ are allowed to exercise the “new” principle of giving for the benefit of others. In turn those who have never responded or perhaps never heard the Gospel are allowed to hear for another year 24/7. I hope you are excited about another year of opportunity and will have a part in this ministry to the community. Although we missed the goal it is still in sight. You can still take part and we can fill the year with real life stories of how God spoke to someone by means of radio and encouraged them or changed their life.

These will be the testimonies of next year’s Prayer and Praise Day and the main theme will always be “To God Be the Glory”!
Lee J. Martinez

Thanks to you and your gifts during Sharathon Papua New Guinea will be provided 290 (one radio for each $1,000 pledged) fixed tuned radios. Here’s a report from Wantok Radio Light on how this Christian influence is impacting their world.
Wantok Radio Light: Raising a Unified Voice in Papua New Guinea by Patti Olson One voice with the message of God’s love is joining people separated by about 800 tribal languages in the Pacific island nation of Papua New Guinea (PNG). “Praise the Lord for this radio station! It’s been a blessing to have a Christian radio station [reach] places or villages we cannot reach,” wrote a faithful listener, recounting how the broadcasts “have won many souls to Christ.” Wantok Radio Light (WRL), in conjunction with HCJB Global Voice and other international partners, airs Christian music and Bible teaching across PNG. Programming, transmitted to remote sites via satellite, originates in the capital, Port Moresby. Broadcasts air to cities and remote communities through a network of 10 FM stereo transmitters and a low-power shortwave station. Tribal tensions commonly erupt into brutal warfare, but Christ’s love is bringing peace and forgiveness. Wantoks are tribal members who speak the same language or “one talk.” This pidgin word was chosen to emphasize that believers become brothers, or Wantoks, through their Christian faith. Summarizing the impact of PNG’s first Christian radio network, a pastor reported two major changes: church attendance has grown dramatically, and local churches are working together for the first time. Pastors listen as teachings by Ravi Zacharias, Woodrow Kroll and others help them grow theologically. Local pastors offer devotions along with a daily hour of prayer for the country and its leaders. Announcers host forums addressing Christian concerns, and major church events are broadcast live nationwide.
A group of ladies told the staff that “there is something different about the country, and it’s your radio station.” This developing nation’s leaders have stated publicly that PNG needs Jesus, and they are proud that their constitution declares PNG as a Christian nation.
Listeners recount the dramatic impact of WRL’s Bible programs. One woman said, “What a privilege to have this radio ministry in PNG. It is so amazing to see my marriage restored just by listening to the radio.” Children also tell how Jesus has helped them face difficulties as a result of hearing special children’s programs. A gang leader of 33 years was transformed by Christ after listening to “Unshackled,” a program that dramatizes people’s encounters with Jesus. As a public testimony of his salvation, he even cut down a tree where animal sacrifices were made to initiate new gang members. Since WRL began broadcasting in 2002, PNG’s government has been favorable to its expansion and has reserved an FM frequency for its exclusive use nationwide. Listeners cover the network’s operating budget through sharathons with even the poorest giving a few precious coins or a basket of fresh food for the radio staff. Others make generous financial gifts, or give a much-needed vehicle. The network will continue to grow as the vision for Christian radio and its power to spread the gospel is communicated. |
